Technical Explanation

The Vesta controller is a web server. In order to connect to it, you must know its IP address. Most home and business networks use a router which masks the internal network from the outside world. This results in a situation where a computer such as the Vesta controller may have a different effective IP address on the internal network than on the Internet.

To make matters worse, both the internal and external IP addresses may change from time to time, depending on the network configuration. To solve this problem, the Vesta controller periodically sends a data packet to a server at Vermont Energy Control Systems. This packet contains the controller's internal and external IP addresses and its serial number. That data is used to provide the links on this page.

Troubleshooting

The Vesta controller's serial number is on a sticker on the bottom of the right side panel.

If the internal link does not work, first make sure that you're on the same network as the Vesta controller. Some facilities may have multiple isolated networks, such as a private/secure network and a 'guest' network for wi-fi Internet access.

It may be that either the internal or external IP has changed since the last time the Vesta controller sent a data packet to our server. By default, these packets are sent at system startup and once an hour thereafter.

In order to access your Vesta controller from the Internet, you must first set up port forwarding. If this hasn't been done, outside access is not possible.
